I have found this combo phenomenally accurate with 220gr jacketed RN bullets. Has anybody tried it with different weight bullets?

I have tried it with both 220s and180s. 308 cal jacketed bullets are undersized for the bore of my roifle and don't shoot all that well. This is not the fault of the powder! My success in the Krag has been with .312 sized cast bullets. I intend to try .311 sized jacketed someday and I'll use 4350 again.

I have a .310 bore and get good results with lower end published data. Apparently the bullet hits the rifling squarely and obturates. |

When I worked up those loads I used the OCW method starting at min charge weight and working up. There were no good groups. The best this rifle has done with 308 bullets has been 4 moa with 180 gr round nose. In cast sized 312 it will shoot 1.5 to 2 moa.

My '98 Krag was my first "real" rifle and I learned to hand load on it 35 years ago. I've tried every bullet weight in it (including 110 gr .30 carbine slugs) and by far the most accurate is 220s with IMR 4350. The heavier the charge the better. I shoot the max load as listed in whatever year loading manual I had into 1 1/2 inch groups with a peep rear. Every time I fool around with a lighter slug the groups open up. I think it just likes that long cylinder. I"m a heavy-for-caliber guy so shooting the 220s makes me warm and fuzzy inside.
